There are several methods which can be used to improve the operation of a noisy door.  Here is a brief summary of those methods.  Keep in mind that in all cases, the homeowner or technician should take precautions to make sure the door is not operated while they work on it and ensure that only a trained technician repair or adjust parts that are under tension.

Important Note - Noise Can Come From the Door or Opener

Consider that the garage door may be functioning correctly and the noise is actually from the opener.  It is often easier to identify a noise source if you disconnect the opener and operate the door manually.  If the noise is not present when operating the door manually, the opener is the most likely cause of the noise.  In this situation, refer to your garage door operator maintenance manual for assistance, and reach out to a trained technician if needed.

If the noise is present when operating the door manually, there are several methods to address possible causes of noise.

Method One - Tighten Nuts and Bolts.

Using a wrench and socket set to retighten these bolts and screws can potentially quiet the garage door almost completely. Be careful not to overtighten!  This could strip the lag screw holes or pull the carriage bolt heads through the garage door.

Method Two - Lubricate or Replace the Rollers

Regularly lubricate all moving parts of the door with Ideal Door Pro Lube.  Do not lubricate the nylon portion of the rollers or other plastic garage door components, as the petroleum in the lubricant can degrade these materials. Also, do not use WD-40 or other de-greaser.  On older doors, rollers should be replaced. Replacement parts can be found on Menards.com.  Please contact a trained technician to make adjustments or repairs if you cannot do so safely.

Method 3 - Lubricate Springs

First, know that garage door springs and parts connected to springs are under extreme tension. If a spring or part connected to a spring appears to be broken, worn out, or in need of adjustment, contact a trained technician to make these adjustments or repairs.

If the springs are operating properly and are not worn out, lubricating them using Ideal Door Pro Lube may reduce the garage door noise. Be Careful not to over-lubricate, as excess may drip onto the door surface during door operation.

Method 4 - Lubricate or Replace Hinges

Check the hinges to see if they are broken, worn out or have dust or metal filings around the hinge area. These parts should be replaced on older doors or if a hinge appears to be broken, worn out, or in need of adjustment.  Replacement parts can be ordered on Menards.com.  Please contact a trained technician to make adjustments or repairs if you cannot do so safely.  If your hinges are in good condition, we recommend that you lubricate them with Ideal Door Pro Lube

Method 5 - For EZ -Set Torsion, Adjust the Tube Retainer

The EZ-Set torsion system use a white plastic tube retainer.  The retainer doesn't need to be and shouldn't be in contact with the shaft in normal operation.  Examine this tube retainer to confirm that it isn't rubbing on the tube. There is ample spacing for it to be positioned around the shaft without touching it

If these methods do not improve the noise, reach out to a trained technician to inspect the door.
